The Power of Self-Development: How to Become a Better Person

Becoming a better person doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and a willingness to change. There are countless benefits to becoming a better person, from improving your relationships to increasing your overall happiness. Here are some tips to get you started on your journey to becoming a better person:

Think Before You Speak

Anyone who has ever said something they regretted knows how important it is to think before you speak. Words can be like daggers, leaving deep wounds that take a long time to heal. Even if we apologize for our hurtful words, the damage is often already done. And once words are spoken, we can never take them back. It only takes a moment to pause and consider the consequences of our words before we say them, but that moment can make all the difference in the world.  As a result, we can build positive relationships with others and be the best version of ourselves.

Embrace Change

Change is something that we all go through, whether we like it or not. And while it can be scary, change is also an essential part of life. After all, how would we ever grow and improve if we never changed?  Ask yourself what lessons the universe is trying to teach you and how you can implement those lessons to better serve your needs and the needs of others.  Looking for the “silver lining” during a trying time of change is key to accepting it.

Be Grateful

One of the best ways to become a better person is to be grateful for what you have. It’s easy to take the good things in our lives for granted, but when we take the time to appreciate them, we can find true happiness. So, take a moment each day to think about the things you are grateful for. It could be something as simple as a roof over your head or a delicious meal. Or it could be something bigger, like good health or a loving relationship. Whatever it is, taking the time to appreciate the good things in your life will make you a happier and better person.

Practice Letting Go

Letting go of hurtful encounters with friends and loved ones is one of the most important and difficult virtues to practice. When someone hurts us, it’s natural to want revenge or to hold a grudge. But forgiveness is the only way to truly move on from the hurt. If you can let go of something that has caused you great suffering, you are now free from that situation.  Learn from the past, but do your best to live in the moment.

Embrace Your Imperfections Through Personal Development

No one is perfect. We all have weaknesses and flaws. But the key to becoming a better person is to identify areas in your life that you wish to improve and take the steps to do so. Facing things, you do not like about yourself requires introspection and foresight. This is often called “shadow work,” meaning that you address the “darker” aspects of yourself, embrace them, and learn how to work with them.  Doing so can be life-changing because you are working with yourself rather than against it.  This is one of the hardest parts of personal development, so start small and be patient with yourself.  Ask yourself if you are improving, even in small steps.  If the answer is “yes,” then you are well on your way!
